After the Second World War, the export of clay from the German clay mining areas became increasingly important. From the middle of the seventies onward, clay transports to Italy - to the northern Italian regions with ceramic manufacturers - were more and more transferred from the truck to the railways. The trains went on a 900 km long journey from the German Westerwald via Switzerland to Italy.
